Have you already been to Amsterdam a few times or sick of the touristy city center? Than it might be time to visit Amsterdam West.
Museum “het Schip” in Amsterdam School Architecture
What can you do in this area? Activities in different parts of West:
1. De School:
This is an old school building that has been transformed to a restaurant / café, nightclub and sport facility. It kind of has this hip neighborhood gathering centre idea going on. The interior decoration is like retro 70’s / Bauhaus / minimalistic style. Just expand your mind and go there. I can recommend the sandwich with Avocado and Poached egg, nice and healthy.
We eat here a lot! De Hallen we call it in Dutch, is an old tram remise that has been renovated into a food court and also houses a movie theatre, several shops, an art gallery, and library. The nice thing about the food court is that the food choice is varied: Vietnamese, Flammkuchen, Korean, Sushi, Vegetarian, you name it. And the preparation is fast.
I like this park because it has a lot of nature, but there are also facilities like a few restaurants, a movie theatre, clubs, a kindergarden in this park. And this also where the locals go when they want to sit in the sun, sorry… it’s not the Vondelpark. Two weeks ago we discovered de Buurtboerderij, it’s on the furthest end of the park, but the atmosphere was very cozy. I recommend you go there in daytime, because the walking route to the Buurtboerderij is a little bit darkish in the evening.
Because we live in this area of town we are kind of biased. The most beautiful architecture is in this part of the City. You have museum het Schip it’s shaped in the form of a ship and you can see a house in the Amsterdam school style from the inside.
There are a few shopping area’s in West, but the most varied shopping street in West is de Rozengracht. You have a few interior furniture shops like the Kitch Kitchen and Hutspot. Want to buy some party clothes, there are like 3 carnival shops here. You have a makeup store with professional makeup supplies. A few restaurants. A spiritual bookshop. What else.. lot’s more, just check it out.
Want to combine one of these sights with a canal tour?
