Wednesday 27th of April it’s Kingsday in Amsterdam. But what kind of festivity is this?
On this day we celebrate the birthday of the King. This is a national holiday. Throughout the Netherlands there will be celebrations and also the king will choose 1 place he will go and visit in person.
In Amsterdam it’s more the people’s festivity. The people will go to large dance festivals, sell old furniture or clothes in the street markets we call “Vrijmarkt”. In the Vondel park kids will play music instruments. What I always like is when people do little games in the street, like throwing eggs or twister.
And everybody will dress in orange clothing. Yes, we are famous for our sense of style :). Why orange? Because the royal family’s last name is “van Oranje” (that means of Orange).
In Amsterdam it’s usually very crowded in the city. The most popular canal is de Prinsengracht. If you have a boat, everybody goes to that canal. It’s like a parade, to see and be seen.
We sail every year on Kingsday. We have 3-4 tours during a day like this.
As you can see in the picture, we too dress up on this day.
This year we’re fully booked already. Maybe you want to go with us next year?
Be the first and let us know in January 2017!
